Stamped concrete is the best-looking flatwork you can buy for the money, and it is also the one most homeowners neglect into an early grave. The concrete itself is the same 4,000 psi air-entrained slab as any other patio; what makes it stamped is a thin layer of color hardener, a release agent, and a sealer on top. Those top layers are what winter attacks. Here is what they need.

Sealer: The Part Everyone Gets Wrong
The sealer on stamped concrete is not paint and it is not a waterproof coating. It is a thin, breathable film, usually a solvent-based acrylic, that keeps liquid water and salt out while letting water vapor from the slab escape. Every stamped-concrete failure that is not a base failure is a sealer failure, and there are three of them.
Too thick. A homeowner or a landscaper puts on a second heavy coat "for extra protection." Vapor from the slab cannot get out, condenses under the film, and the surface goes white or cloudy. This is called blushing, and it is the number one reason people think their color faded. It did not; it is under a fogged window. The fix is a solvent wipe with xylene to re-flow the sealer, or a full strip.
Wrong product. Epoxy, polyurethane deck coatings, and "wet look" products marketed for garage floors trap moisture in an outdoor slab and peel in sheets after one winter. Outdoor stamped concrete gets an acrylic labeled for exterior decorative concrete, breathable, applied thin.
Too late. Water should bead on a sealed surface. When it stops beading and starts soaking in, the sealer is gone, and the color hardener is now exposed to salt and UV. Every season past that point costs color. Reseal on the schedule, not when it looks bad.

Salt
Sodium chloride, ordinary rock salt, is the enemy of every concrete surface in Ohio, and stamped surfaces have the least margin because the color layer is thin. Salt brine soaks into the pores, freezes with more force than plain water, and pops the surface. Salt also attacks the sealer.
The rules: nothing in the first winter, because the slab has not fully cured and the surface is at its most absorbent. After that, calcium chloride or magnesium chloride, used sparingly and swept off when the ice is gone. Never rock salt, never anything with ammonium nitrate or ammonium sulfate (some "pet safe" products), and never fertilizer as a de-icer. Sand gives traction with no chemistry. A plastic shovel edge will not chip the stamp pattern; a metal one will.
Water Under The Slab
Freeze-thaw damage that shows up as a whole section lifting, or a crack that opens along a joint, is not a surface problem. It is water under the slab, which means the base or the drainage. A stamped patio is pitched away from the house at 1/8 inch per foot like any other, sits on 4 inches of compacted stone, and has a half-inch expansion joint at the house wall. Keep the joints caulked and the downspouts pointed away from it and the slab stays put.
If a stamped patio was poured flat, or on dirt, no amount of sealing saves it. That is a replacement, and the maintenance schedule above only applies to a patio built right.
Color: What Fades And What Does Not
Integral color, mixed into the concrete, does not fade; it goes all the way through. Color hardener, broadcast onto the surface and troweled in, is the top 1/8 inch and it does not fade either, but it can be worn away by grit and salt once the sealer is gone. Release agent color, the darker tone in the low spots of the pattern, sits on the surface and is the first thing to go if the sealer fails. What most people call fading is one of three things: sealer blush, worn release color, or a surface film of dirt. Only the second one is permanent, and even that can be restored with a tinted sealer.
The Three First-Winter Mistakes
- Salting it. Covered above. The first winter is the one that matters most.
- Sealing it too early or too late. Sealer before 28 days traps cure moisture and blushes. No sealer at all through the first winter lets salt and water into an unprotected surface. Twenty-eight days, one thin coat.
- Letting water sit against the house. A gutter downspout dumping onto the patio edge next to the foundation freezes the joint, lifts the edge, and sends water into the basement. Extend the downspout past the slab before winter.
What This Costs
A gallon of quality exterior acrylic sealer covers about 200 to 300 square feet at the right thickness and costs $40 to $70. Resealing a 250-square-foot patio is a Saturday afternoon and under $100 in material every two or three years. Against a patio that cost $19 to $26 per square foot to build, that is the cheapest insurance on the property. Skip it, and the difference between a 30-year patio and a 6-year one is that Saturday.

Why is my stamped patio turning white?

Can I use ice melt on stamped concrete?
